ViewA differential voltage probe measures the difference in voltage between two points on the device under test (DUT). However, these two points may be floating; meaning they not ground referenced - typically found in switching power supplies or similar power electronic devices. As the name suggests a Differential Probe uses a differential amplifier along with sufficient input impedance, often several MOhms. The differential probe presents little influence on the DUT's operation and allows safe monitoring of DUT system voltages. Often it is crucial for safety when measuring high-voltage signals in non-ground-referenced circuits. Finally an important distinction is that a differential probe does not use galvanic isolation.
